There have been a few changes to the system at http://cards.sourceforge.net/ recently. I think I'd like to continue to develop the personals system based on this - at least there are 40 or so people who are already there if not actively using the system. Hosting on sourceforge.net at least for a while longer will be okay. I think they allow people to use a mysql database for their project websites too, I've just been using flat files so far. I am thinking what to add to the system next, not sure about order here: 1. account names and passwords 2. little pictures 3. a list of `friends' for each person which is browsable, like orkut 4. an `invite friend' feature 5. message forwarding 6. more database fields and computed fields (e.g. age) 7. a geographic database, for a start just with the towns people have mentioned (I don't think sourceforge would be happy to host the whole USGS database) 8. the facility to create cards for things you want to give away or sell, or want to receive or buy (also, a person can create an `ideal match' profile, like their own profile, for the sort of person they want to meet) 9. cards describing classes of thing, and each card can specify what classes it belongs to 10. private, friends-only and public cards or sections of a card 11. searches based on class cards, e.g. when search for a person the fields relevant to people will appear, when searching for a washing machine, the fields relevant to that will appear... 12. a system of payment, like paypal, or perhaps use paypal for the beginning, so that people can buy and sell things using our system (although I'd like to encourage free giving and receiving as much as possible) 13. a less restrictive card format, with images, layout, etc. anyway, no shortage of ideas, I just need constant injections of enthusiasm and hopefully other peoples' ideas to get the energy to do this.
